Aquila Theatre Company

Due to the overwhelming response from area schools, the evening performance of Julius Caesar originally scheduled on March 26 has been changed to a free noon performance. Tickets are not needed for this performance but groups should contact the Pullo Center for more information. This performance is open to Penn State York students, faculty, staff, and the general public.

The Aquila Theatre Company’s production of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar will follow the epic story of the riseand fall of one of the world’s most notorious leaders. Set in a world of political intrigue and strained domesticrelationships, the production explores the moral and political dilemma of Marcus Brutus. Should he join the conspiracy to assassinate Caesar, conquering hero and his trusted friend? Or, should he allow one man’s tyrannical ambition to overcome the very ideals that Rome was founded upon? The choice that Brutus makes has the power to destroy the old world order and to ignite a fierce civil war.

Aquila’s production asks the audience to consider the price of democracy and freedom and the consequences that can befall a society when it is asked to defend its core beliefs.

Julius Caesar is staged using Aquila’s renowned company aesthetic – excellent acting, crystalline verse-speaking, original music and innovative conceptualization and design. It is the company’s mission to bring“the greatest work to the greatest number.” With Julius Caesar, Aquila will bring one of Shakespeare’s most relevant and timely works to vibrant life in a production that is visceral, challenging and, above all, entertaining.

Steven Anthony Étienne (pronounced Ay-Tee-En) McGinley was born in a small house in a small town in the small state of Maryland to a big family. His mother wanted him to be a priest and his father wanted to join the army, but he discovered juggling instead. Steven began appearing in school plays at the age of ten and he learned to love the sound of laughter and applause. Steven moved back and forth between the USA and France to earn an associate’s degree from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, a diplôme de sociologie from the Sorbonne in Paris and a master’s degree in theater from the École Inter-nationale du Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris. He also trained at the Ringling Bros. Clown College and toured with Cirque Fratellini – Europe’s oldest circus. Steven has since been performing comedy all over the world and believes that laughter can cross all borders. The most symbolic moment of his career was playing French love songs on a tuba for a Chinese audience in Italy. Steven enjoys discovering beauty in unexpected places and plans to never retire.

Top Secret

Top Secret: The Battle for the Pentagon Papers
February 13, 2008
7:30 p.m.
Tickets: $29

Starring Gregory Harrison, John Vickery, Susan Sullivan, and John Heard

Watch the Video!

In a democratic society, should a government be allowed to protect secrets in the name of national security if those secrets are used to cover up politically damaging actions taken by that government? Top Secret: The Battle for the Pentagon Papers is an inside look at The Washington Post’s decision to publish the top secret study documenting U.S. involvement in Vietnam. The subsequent trial tested the parameters of the First Amendment, pitting the public’s right to know against the government’s desire for secrecy. The epic legal battle between the government and the press went to the nation’s highest court and was arguably the most important Supreme Court case ever on freedom of the press.

This play focuses on the ethical issues arising from the publication of the Pentagon papers, which detailed the history of the United States’ involvement in Vietnam from the end of WW II until 1968. In 1971, Daniel Ellsberg, a high level researcher and former State Department official, obtained a copy of the secret papers and leaked them to the New York Times which began publishing excerpts from them. After the Nixon administration obtained an injunction against The New York Times, the Washington Post began its own publication of the papers. Among the ethical issues raised by the episode in our recent past are whistle-blowing, journalistic responsibility, and governmental responsibility and deception in justifying its actions in war. The issues raised by the play are especially timely since many of these same issues have arisen with regard to the war in Iraq.

In this riveting historical docudrama, Top Secret: The Battle for the Pentagon Papers, L.A.Theatre Works brings these important days and the subsequent trial to life as The Washington Post struggles with the decision to publish these “classified” documents. The play, based on interviews and documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, follows the debate played out at Ben Bradlee’s home (The Post’s famous editor) as his staff sorts through the documents and tries to decide if publishing The Papers violates national security. The play includes their momentous decision and the legal wrangling that followed- leading up the historic decision that re-affirmed the First Amendment. Our government’s relationship to the media, the citizenry’s right to information, and the First Amendment are all critically explored against the canvas of the Vietnam War and the secretive Nixon White House.

This program is sponsored by Penn State York's Grumbacher Program in Ethics and Humanistic Studies.

Free!Fort Pastor

Fort Pastor (acoustic guitar)
Tuesday, January 29, 2008
7:00 p.m.
Free

“Unique” is described in Webster’s dictionary as ‘different from others in a way that makes something worthy of note.’  That may be the perfect description for the acoustic music of Fort Pastor. A blend of their Australian and American roots; charismatic acoustic guitars are pounded as often as strummed, with the odd didgeridoo, darabuka, djembe and mandolin thrown in to create an earthy, soulful whole. It’s not just the music that separates this band; this band is a social movement.

Ardently expressing their views on war, social issues, and love within their music; Fort Pastor is out for social justice. So much so that they have created their own foundation called the “Social Justice Army (SJA).”  Fans of the band join the “army” and commit to serving their community one hour a month. With local chapters of the SJA being formed all over the country, people are learning more about the issues their local communities are facing and affecting change. From homelessness to fair trade, Fort Pastor wants their fans to be informed of the problems this generation is facing. Their music serves as the inspiration and motivator for change.

Having gained the respect of organizations such as Bose, Shure, Slide Didge and G7th; the band tours relentlessly around the world. Even though Fort Pastor has shared the stage with the likes of Jars of Clay, Mercy Me, Bebo Norman, Christopher Williams, Maeve, Greg Greenway and dozens of others; they continue to build their underground Army for social change one passionate concert at a time.

Go Diego Go Live!

Go, Diego Go, Live! The Great Jaguar Rescue
Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. and
Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m.
Ticket prices are $36, $27, and $18

It's the biggest party of the year, the Animal Carnivale! Every year all the animals gather at the Great Pyramid for the Carnivale, but the party cannot start until the Chief of Carnivale makes a special sound. This year's chief is Baby Jaguar, who will use his special growl to start the Carnivale. Everyone is headed to the Animal Carnivale when the Bobo brothers show up with a magic bottle that captures Baby Jaguar's growl. Without his growl, Baby Jaguar can't start the Carnivale. Diego and Baby Jaguar need the help of everyone in the audience to get to the Great Pyramid and get his growl back from the Bobo brothers.

Diego and Baby Jaguar head out on an adventure-packed quest to get Baby Jaguar's growl back. Along the way they rescue animals in the rainforest, dance through a coconut-tree forest, traverse a raging river with a giant waterfall, and are helped along by the special appearance of Diego's cousin, Dora. Everyone also learns how each of us is special in our own way.

This Broadway-level production is created by the same team as the record-breaking Dora the Explorer Live, which was seen by over 3 million people. The show is interactive, with every child in the audience getting their own Jaguar mask, which they then use to help rescue animals during the show. Audience members sing, do the cha-cha, travel down a rainforest river, and learn how each of us is special in our own way.

The show also includes familiar songs from the TV show, plus 12 original new songs created exclusively for the live show by the song writing team of George Noriega and Joel Someillan--the creators of the music for Go, Diego, Go! on TV.

$35, $25

The Curtis Symphony Orchestra, composed of more than 100 exceptionally gifted young musicians between the ages of 13 and 25, has been called “an orchestra that any city would be lucky to have as its professional ensemble” (The Philadelphia Inquirer). Under the direction of Otto-Werner Mueller and David Hayes, the orchestra performs a three-concert season in Philadelphia’s Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, as well as programs elsewhere in the region and occasionally at Carnegie Hall. The real-world training has enabled Curtis alumni to assume prominent positions in major orchestras across the United States, Canada, and abroad. Recent visiting conductors include Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Alan Gilbert, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Peter Oundjian, Simon Rattle, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Robert Spano, Michael Stern, Yuri Temirkanov, and David Zinman.

In April 2005, the orchestra performed at Carnegie Hall, and will return in 2007. In previous years, it was orchestra-in-residence at the Rencontres Musicales d'Evian in France and the Verbier Festival in Switzerland.

Eighteen percent of the principal chairs in America's leading orchestras and music directorships of three major orchestras are held by alumni. In the Philadelphia Orchestra alone, almost half of the players (including nine principal chairs of sixteen) are alumni of The Curtis Institute of Music.

80s Rock: Music in the Video Age
Multimedia Presentation by Rock Historian, Barry Drake
Thursday, October 25, 2007
7:00 p.m.
Community Room, Joe & Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center
Free

An annual favorite in Penn State York’s free series, Barry Drake has often been called a walking encyclopedia of rock and roll. A graduate of Manhattan College, he has been totally involved (some would say obsessed) in the world of music since buying his first rock & roll records at 10-years-old. Having seen hundreds of rock concerts, Barry has witnessed Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry at the Brooklyn Paramount, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin at the Fillmore East & West. He watched Bob Dylan go electric at the Newport Folk Festival and when San Francisco exploded with the “Summer of Love,” Barry was there, hanging out in Haight-Ashbury with the Grateful Dead and the Jefferson Airplane and attending the legendary Monterey Pop Festival.

80s Rock: Music in the Video Age: The decade began with the election of Ronald Reagan and the death of John Lennon. On a more uplifting note, MTV and compact discs gave us a new way to experience the music of Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, U2, R.E.M., Michael Jackson, Tom Petty, the Police, Run DMC, Prince, Aerosmith and yes, even Milli Vanilli. Rock and roll was back, alive and well, but it sure had changed. 80s Rock: Music in the Video Age will take us on an exciting trip through rock’s fourth decade.

An Evening with Livingston Taylor
Friday, October 12, 2007
8:00 p.m.
Tickets: $10 (free to Penn State York students with I.D).

Livingston Taylor’s career as a professional musician has rattled along for more than thirty years. He has toured with Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffett, Fleetwood Mac, and Jethro Tull. He has recorded thirteen albums and three retrospectives. He currently maintains a performing schedule of more than a hundred shows a year, which include club, theater, college, and full symphony repertoire.

Livingston has written most of his music repertoire, including such Top Forty hits as “I Will Be in Love with You” and “I’ll Come Running”; and, (recorded by his brother James), “I Can Dream of You,” “Going ‘Round One More Time,” and “Boatman” (off the double Grammy-winning album Hourglass). In 1988 he received the Boston Music Award for outstanding folk artist.

Describing himself as a pop singer, Livingston includes his guitar and piano in his performances. The piano has supplanted the five-string banjo as the difficulties of air travel have forced him to leave it at home.  He says it is a nice idea to be able to sit down to play as one grows older. “It’s no mean feat, making a living as a professional musician for thirty years,” he says. Don’t miss this very special evening.

Las Paredes
by Griselda Gambaro, performed in Spanish by students from Messiah College taking senior level Spanish courses

Las Pareda Thursday, April 19, 2007
7:00 p.m.

The play is a provocative work that explores the psychological denigration of a young person in captivity. Inexplicably detained and locked up in an otherwise innocuous room, he is regularly visited by state servants, who methodically undermine his grasp on reality through mind games and mixed messages. Meanwhile, the man's physical surroundings slowly begin to change. Written in 1965, it originally described the authoritarian rule in Argentina, in which the state and military together triumphed over the citizen. Gambaro's brilliant use of drama and dark humor portray the individual's inability to rise up against totalitarian aggressors. Today, the play still resonates with meaning worldwide, as we witness secret prisons, heated debate about the definition and limitations of torture, government corruption and cover-ups, and public complacency as human rights are flagrantly ignored.

Dominic Gaudious

Dynamic, intense, and passionate are just some of the words used to describe the innovative work of instrumental guitarist and composer, Dominic Gaudious. After successfully releasing two albums and touring with an eclectic rock band in the 1980s, Dominic found his passion in the contemplative world of Classical/World Beat music. Working mainly with six- and twelve-string acoustic guitars and incorporating exotic instruments such as the Australian Didjeridu, Dominic expanded on the theme and created a uniquely intricate playing style which blends the sounds of classical, jazz, Flamenco, folk, and world beat. Often compared to Michael Hedges and Leo Kottke, Dominic’s appealing sound has become widely sought after for festivals, benefits and concerts such as the Race Unity Festival, PETA, Greenpeace, and Citizens for a Better Environment.

Dominic GaudiousDominic has performed at the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, the Australian Embassy, Montreux Music Festival, for National Geographic, opened for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and appeared with Acoustic Alchemy, The Rippingtons, and world-renowned guitarists such as Pierre Bensusan and Adrian Legg. Most recently Dominic’s music has been featured on NPR, he has toured Japan, appeared with Pat Benatar, Kip Winger, appeared on FOX TV’s "30 Seconds to Fame," and performed for John Petrucci, Joe Satriani, and Steve Vai.

Mary Ann Winkowski (Lecture) –
“The Ghost Whisperer”
Mary Ann Winkowski

Friday, October 27, 2006
7:00 p.m.
Tickets: $12 adults, free for Penn State York students with ID

Mary Ann’s earliest memories include talking to spirits of the deceased as if they were living people and helping these earthbound entities crossover into the white light.

Over the course of her life, Mary Ann’s reputation has spread and she has appeared on numerous TV and radio news programs and has spoken at countless lectures. In 2000, Mary Ann published her first book of memoirs, As Alive, So Dead , which is now in its third printing. This book is a memoir only Mary Ann can write. Because of her ability to see and talk to ghosts she is able to write a book that shows the human side of the paranormal -- stories about ghosts told from the perspectives of the ghosts themselves. Far from the sensationalized tales of most ghost lore, As Alive, So Dead presents real stories of troubled people -- both the living and the dead -- not simply the terror of sinister manifestations seen through the glitzy filter of Hollywood.

Mary Ann offers lessons on death and the immortality of the spirit that only someone who can actually speak with the deceased could teach. Her abilities have offered solace to countless people, reuniting them with loved ones who have died or else removing unwanted spirits from people’s homes. Mary Ann offers hope and understanding to people who have no where else to turn. She seeks to ease the suffering of those who she can reach--those living and those who have already crossed over...

Amazing. That’s the only word that can accurately describe Wayne Hoffman. Since 1994 Wayne has performed Mind Candy for hundreds of thousands of people across the United States. His name is now synonymous with professional mystery entertainment. The show includes some of Wayne's signature effects such as his infamous “soda can effect” and his pre-show predictions of his audiences actions. Wayne can even make women appear from nowhere right on stage! During all of the shows, Wayne constantly has people participate both individually and as a group. The audience doesn't just watch the show, they become part of the show. No other form of entertainment allows for this kind of interaction. Wayne's shows are an intricately woven script of magic and illusion that spins a web of deception around the audience and helps capture their imaginations. Be careful what you’re thinking….he might be listening. Oh yeah, as a side note, watch your wallet and wristwatch. Wayne is also a professional pickpocket. (Don’t worry, he’s the honest kind. He always returns his loot in an entertaining and tactful manner).

70s Rock: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
Multimedia Presentation by Rock Historian, Barry Drake

Thursday, October 19, 2006
Barry Drake - Rock Historian 7:00 p.m.
Conference Center, Lower Level, Main Classroom Building
www.barrydrake.com

Barry Drake has often been called a walking encyclopedia of rock & roll. Barry's rock & roll lectures on the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s have become the most popular shows on college campuses. He is the five time winner of the “Campus Lecturer of the Year Award” by the National Association for Campus Activities and the three time winner of the “Campus Lecturer of the Year Award” by Campus Activities Magazine. Combining his extensive knowledge of music and his abilities as a dynamic entertainer, Barry Drake has succeeded in making his rock lectures the best and most exciting on the national lecture circuit.

70s Rock: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
The 60s were over, but were they really? As the 70s began, the Vietnam War, the draft and Richard Nixon were still with us and so was some of the best rock music ever made!

Groups like Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd were just reaching their full potential in the early 70s. Singer songwriters such as James Taylor, Elton John and Joni Mitchell would make rock music more personal than ever. By the mid 70s, rock was no longer the music of the counterculture, it WAS the culture. With this growth and mass acceptance, the fiery spirit of the music began to go soft, allowing for the rise of pop rock and disco. Punk and reggae appeared; restoring the outlaw spirit of rock & roll and by the late 70s triggered a new wave explosion which brought excitement and creativity back to rock. 70s Rock: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly will examine one of the most confusing, misunderstood and criticized decades in rock & roll history.

The Blue Method

Blue MethodThursday, September 28, 2006
8:00 p.m.
www.thebluemethod.com

"It's the earth-shaking swagger, the righteous vocals, and the pure funk power that make this band one to watch! Taking the old-school styles listeners love and melding them into their own brand of superior soul, The Blue Method simply has "it" - the elusive magic that turns music into an addictive elixir. By way of a fantastic debut album (Kill The Music Vol. 1) and outrageous performances, this Philadelphia band announces their presence with mighty blast of horns and a pummeling rhythm!" - The Home Grown Music Network

Philadelphia’s The Blue Method brings together the sounds of old school and douses them with a modern influence of fusion, funk and experimental rock, blending them all into something they like to call “Power Soul”. When on stage, the band strives to make each and every person in the crowd move to the sounds they lay down from deep thumping funk to smooth grooving soul. From high profile festival performances (Green Apple Music Festival in NYC, Jam on the River in Philly etc.) to tour dates spread out across the country (Montana, Michigan, Maine, North Carolina etc.), The Blue Method are quickly becoming one of the most sought after acts in the country.

This five-piece powerhouse have had the opportunity to share the stage with such acts as Chick Corea, John Legend, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, The Disco Biscuits, Soulive, The New Deal, The Duo, Oteil Burbridge (of The Allman Brothers Band), Drive By Truckers, Ozomatli, Railroad Earth, Little Feat and Amos Lee to name a few.

Energized by a return to the studio after their 2004 release “Kill The Music: Volume 1”, a victory in the 2005 Relix JamOff, their addition to The Home Grown Music Network and subsequently being named “Best New Home Grown Band of 2005”, and their intense focus on the mastery of their amazing live performance, the future for The Blue Method looks extremely bright.

Great Jazz DivasWhen it comes to musical fireworks, this award winning dynamic duo light up the stage. Davis and Dow tackle jazz and pop standards such as the music of Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, the Beatles, Al Jarreau, and Hendrix with a daring sense of abandon. Julie Davis is a gifted singer with a gorgeous voice; a risk-taker who’s scatting suggests she learned in her bassinet. Kelly Dow plays positively orchestral. His ability to fuse classical, flamenco, rock, blues, and jazz shapes his unique sound. They’ve toured Japan, London, and New York, composed and performed for the TV show “Food Nation with Bobby Flay,” and produced “DIVAS OF JAZZ,” a culturally educational and musically entertaining concert celebrating seven unique singers. Their latest CD, Naked, won Best Jazz Album at the Florida Music Awards, and they were voted Best Jazz Artists by New Times Magazine.

Chinua Hawk
“Pop-Soul” Phenomenon

Thursday, February 9, 2006
7:00 p.m.
Pullo Family Performing Arts Center

Chinua HawkChinua (pronounced shin-WAH) is Nigerian for “God’s own blessing.” Abdul is Muslim for “servant of Allah.” Hawk comes from his Native American heritage. If ever an individual lived up to his name, Chinua was destined to create great music. Heavily influenced by the vocal strength of Whitney Houston, Chinua holds dear to him the words of his sister, Kim Williams, who said, “Nobody likes a weak singer.” With that in mind, Chinua went on to astound and captivate audiences in passing with his voice. Based on the inspiration of legendary singers such as Stevie Wonder and Donnie Hathaway, Chinua’s lyrics can be defined as mirrors to life experiences. He clearly creates an edge to the industry terminology, Pop, and combines it with good old-fashioned soul. He's coined the phrase “Pop-Soul” and made this his niche. With the unique ability to express the feelings in his music in such a way that listeners will fall into the melody of each note, Chinua’s musical prowess is universal. As he sings, you can’t help but feel as though Chinua is singing his songs directly to you, from his heart to yours. In this age of glitz, glamour, and special effects, Chinua is a much needed relief from the gimmicks. He projects a trait that has been absent from the music world for far too long--realism.

KomplexIntelligent, magnetic and smooth only begin to describe the experience of Komplex. Most often compared to Common, Mos Def or Talib Kweli, “Kom” is a writer among writers, from the dimension of hip-hop where real lyricists lounge. His humor, warmth and professionalism will embrace you; add to that gripping delivery, wordplay that is nothing less than captivating, a potent presence and you have the package. The pen is to the page as his presence is to the stage; equally potent, equally moving facets of this multi-talented artist.

During the last five years, Komplex has performed internationally as an invited guest to the annual international poetry concert “When Brothers Speak” in Ontario, Canada and has shared stages with some great contemporary artists and TV personalities. Professional, inspiring and entertaining, Kom has performed at various events in Baltimore; Washington, DC; and New York City. Cheryl Wheeler
Folk Singer

Friday, November 4, 2005
7:30 p.m.
Pullo Family Performing Arts Center

Cheryl WheelerIt has always seemed as if there were two Cheryl Wheelers. There is poet-Cheryl, writer of some of the prettiest, most alluring and intelligent ballads on the modern folk scene. And there is her evil twin, comic-Cheryl, a militant trend defier and savagely funny social critic.

Poet-Cheryl writes achingly honest songs of love and loss, contrasting the prosaic landscapes of her native small town America with the hopelessly rootless life of the traveling performer in ways that touch common chords with any who feel the tug between our busy, noisome times and the timeless longing for simplicity and silence. Comic-Cheryl comes on like Groucho-in-a-housecoat; a fiercely everyday woman with a barbed-wire tongue, shredding the mores of our gossipy, greedy, trend-obsessed culture, always aiming enough darts at herself to never seem sanctimonious.

As the two forces smooth their conflict, take their separate turns and meld into the same artistic vision, Wheeler emerges as a gifted and openhearted songwriter approaching the sure summit of her craft. Her abiding faith in her audience’s ability to find their own life reflected in the sweet spaces of her songs reveals an artist comfortably wearing the austere genius that defines folk music’s best traditions. More confidently and beautifully than ever before, she proves that the poet and the comic are one and the same.

Yes, Bob Saget starred on two of the most family-friendly shows network TV has ever produced (“Full House” and “America’s Funniest Home Videos”), but he's also a whip-smart stand-up comedian for over twenty years. As anyone who remembers his scene-stealing cameos in films like "Half Baked", "Dumb & Dumber," and HBO’s "Entourage" will attest, there’s something utterly hilarious about seeing the clean cut, boyishly charming Saget embracing his dark side. His decidedly adult brand of comedy, which deals with life as a single dad, dating, divorce, and any questions you had about "Full House," will leave you looking at Saget in a whole new light.
Note: contains adult language and humor.
